Danbury, CT (July 23, 2026) – Four people were hurt and roughly 80 residents were displaced after a fire tore through a condominium building in a complex off Sandpit Road on Thursday, July 23.
Fire officials began receiving calls around 4:12 p.m. The fire quickly spread through the building and reached a second alarm within minutes. Crews found flames spreading through the building when they reached the property.
Roughly 60 emergency personnel worked to control the fire. Crews used a ground ladder to safely rescue one resident trapped on a balcony.
Three civilians were taken to Danbury Hospital. One emergency crew member was also taken for evaluation, while a dog rescued from the building was brought to a veterinary hospital in Newtown.
A three-floor pancake collapse occurred inside the structure during firefighting operations. Crews brought most of the fire under control in about two hours.
The American Red Cross is helping roughly 80 residents displaced from their homes. The Danbury Fire Marshal’s Office is working to determine what sparked the fire.
Our thoughts are with those hurt and everyone affected by this incident.
What Damages Can You Recover After an Apartment Fire in Danbury, CT?
After an apartment fire in Danbury, CT residents may seek compensation for medical bills, lost income, temporary housing, damaged belongings, and pain and suffering. The available recovery depends on what caused the fire and which insurance policies apply. Different policies may cover different losses.
Once the immediate danger passes, injury-related costs can become a serious burden. Smoke exposure, burns, and injuries sustained while escaping may require ongoing care. Medical expenses and missed wages may form a large part of a claim.
Across Danbury, apartment buildings vary in age, design, and safety features. Wiring, alarms, sprinklers, and maintenance practices may differ from one property to another. Inspection and repair records can help identify unsafe conditions.
Before accepting an insurance offer, you should calculate the full cost of rebuilding your daily life. Hotel stays, storage, meals, transportation, and replacement furniture can add up quickly. Plus, separate expenses may make the total loss easy to underestimate.
When unsafe property conditions contribute to a fire, compensation may extend beyond renters insurance. Missing alarms, blocked exits, faulty wiring, or ignored repairs may point to negligent maintenance. Photographs, complaints, and property records can help establish responsibility.
When several insurance policies are involved, the claims process may become difficult to manage. A personal injury attorney can review available coverage, examine maintenance records, and identify recoverable losses. A lawyer may also help prevent an early settlement from leaving out future costs.
