Newtown, CT (February 24, 2026) – A serious highway crash left a 16-year-old boy with suspected life-threatening injuries on Saturday, February 21, in Newtown. The crash occurred on Interstate 84 East, according to Connecticut State Police.
Police reported that a 2009 Honda Civic LX was traveling east in the left lane at a high rate of speed. A 2015 Toyota Rav4, which was moving even faster, cut in front of the Honda and braked abruptly. The Honda lost control, crossed the highway, and struck the jersey barrier along the right shoulder.
The impact left a 16-year-old passenger in the Honda unresponsive at the scene. Emergency crews rushed him to a nearby hospital with suspected life-threatening injuries. The 18-year-old driver of the Honda and a 14-year-old passenger also suffered suspected minor injuries and received medical evaluation.
The Toyota fled the scene, but officers later located the vehicle. Eastbound lanes of I-84 were closed for several hours as troopers documented the crash and directed traffic around the area. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
