Sterling, CT (April 2, 2025) – An elderly woman was seriously hurt in a pedestrian crash in Sterling on April 2. Police say a 45-year-old woman was operating a Ford Explorer XLT headed east on Plainfield Pike, or Route 14A, when she struck the woman. Connecticut State Police responded to the scene along with paramedics shortly after the collision occurred.
The victim, a resident of Oneco, was trying to cross the two-lane road in the vicinity of the post office, reports said. Responders were called to the 1100 block of Plainfield Pike at approximately 12:15 p.m. The injured female pedestrian was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by LifeStar for injury treatment. Route 14A was closed near Newport Road due to the accident. Police continue to investigate the details of the accident.
We hope for the full and rapid recovery of the injured victim.
Connecticut Pedestrian Accidents
Across the United States, car and pedestrian accidents continue to be a major threat to public safety. Each year, over six million motor vehicle collisions are reported nationwide—an alarming figure that reflects the magnitude of the problem. These crashes leave an estimated three million individuals suffering from injuries, while nearly 40,000 tragically lose their lives annually. Behind the majority of these devastating incidents—over 93%—is a common factor: driver negligence.
Over the last ten years, negligent driving has steadily become the leading cause of traffic accidents in America. Despite increased awareness and stronger safety laws, far too many drivers still choose to act carelessly behind the wheel. The most frequent forms of negligent driving we see today include:
- Distracted Driving – from texting and scrolling to adjusting the radio or talking to passengers
- Driving Under the Influence – alcohol and drugs continue to impair judgment and slow reaction times
- Excessive Speeding – pushing speed limits not only reduces control but also increases crash severity
- Driver Fatigue – tired drivers are often just as dangerous as intoxicated ones
Sadly, pedestrians are among the most vulnerable when drivers behave irresponsibly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that roughly 51% of all reported traffic incidents involve a pedestrian. When a person on foot is struck by a vehicle, the results are almost always devastating. These collisions often lead to life-altering injuries—or, in the worst cases, loss of life.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a pedestrian accident caused by a reckless or negligent driver, you are not alone, and you should not have to carry the weight of recovery alone either. Physical pain, emotional distress, mounting medical expenses, and time away from work can feel overwhelming. And when the accident wasn’t your fault, it only adds to the injustice.
