Bridgeport, CT (April 9, 2026) – An elderly man died on Tuesday, April 7, after a house fire broke out on Hallock Street in Bridgeport. Emergency crews arrived at the 40 block of Hallock Street at approximately 9:45 p.m. and found heavy fire coming from the rear of the building.
A second resident had already escaped the home when firefighters arrived. That person told officers his friend was still inside, trapped in a back bedroom near the bulk of the fire. Crews began an interior search and rescue operation while working to control the flames.
Firefighters were unable to reach the victim due to the volume of fire. More than 30 emergency personnel responded to the scene. Fire Chief Lance Edwards described the response as textbook in terms of operations, water supply, and rescue efforts.
Officials confirmed the victim was a man in his 80s. His identity has not been released. Authorities also noted the home did not have working smoke detectors.
The investigation into the fatal fire remains ongoing.
