Colchester, CT (July 14, 2025) – A devastating three-vehicle crash on Route 16 claimed the lives of two people on Sunday afternoon, July 13, and left several others injured, according to Connecticut State Police.
The collision occurred around 4:15 p.m. near Middletown Road. Authorities say a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek was headed west on Route 16, approaching the intersection with Cato Corner Road, when it was struck from behind by a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Sport.
The impact caused the Crosstrek to veer off to the right shoulder and roll over. The Hyundai then crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with a 2014 Toyota RAV4.
Both the Hyundai and the RAV4 drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. On Monday, officials identified the victims as 28-year-old Jennifer Leinbach of Norwich and 27-year-old Carlos Bauer of Colchester.
Four additional individuals were injured and transported to the hospital, including a pregnant woman who was airlifted by LIFE STAR helicopter. State police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Colchester Resident Trooper’s Office.
We extend our sincere sympathies to the family of the deceased victim. We also hope those hurt recover swiftly.
Connecticut Car Accidents
In an instant, a fatal car crash can devastate families and change lives forever. Sadly, fatal collisions are all too common on Connecticut’s roads. Each year, hundreds of people lose their lives in motor vehicle accidents across the state, often as a result of reckless, negligent, or impaired driving.
From highways like I-95 and I-91 to local streets in communities like East Haven, drivers face daily risks. A moment of distraction, a split-second decision to speed, or getting behind the wheel while fatigued or impaired can have irreversible consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 93% of fatal crashes involve driver-related errors—mistakes that could have been prevented.
For the loved ones left behind, the emotional toll is only part of the struggle. Surviving family members are often burdened with unexpected funeral costs, lost income, and the long-term psychological impact of losing a spouse, parent, or child. While no legal action can undo the loss, pursuing a wrongful death claim can provide critical financial support and help hold the responsible party accountable.
