North Branford, CT (June 23, 2025) — A fatal two-vehicle collision occurred late Friday morning, June 20, along Route 80, claiming the life of an elderly driver and temporarily closing a stretch of the busy roadway.

The crash took place shortly after 10 a.m. in front of the Twin Lakes Commons plaza at 999 Foxon Road, according to authorities. One of the drivers, 85-year-old Roger Munck of Northford, suffered critical injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he later died. The other driver involved sustained only minor injuries.

As emergency responders worked the scene, Route 80 was closed between Twin Lakes Road and Cedar Lake Road. The road remained shut down for several hours before reopening just before 2 p.m.

The North Branford Police Department is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and urges anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. Witnesses can contact the local police for more information.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased individual.

Connecticut Car Accidents

Connecticut, like much of the nation, continues to grapple with the devastating impact of fatal car accidents. Each year, hundreds of lives are lost on the state’s roads, with over 300 traffic fatalities reported in a recent year alone. These tragic losses affect not only the victims but also their families, who are often left dealing with overwhelming grief and financial strain.

Across the United States, more than 6 million car crashes occur annually, and a significant number of these end in death. In Connecticut, driver negligence remains a leading contributor to fatal collisions. Distracted driving—such as texting, phone use, or other in-vehicle distractions—is a major cause of deadly crashes. Speeding, impaired driving, and driver fatigue also play a critical role. In fact, speeding was a factor in more than 11,000 crash-related deaths nationwide in a single year.

When a fatal accident is caused by another driver’s reckless or careless behavior, surviving family members may have the right to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. While no amount of money can undo the loss, financial recovery can help cover funeral costs, medical bills, loss of income, and the pain and suffering endured by those left behind.
