Hamden, CT (November 5, 2025) – A 34-year-old man tragically lost his life on Tuesday, November 4, in a violent scooter crash on Mix Avenue near the south entrance of Broadmoor Apartments in Hamden.

Authorities identified the victim as Shareef Johnson, of Meriden. Investigators said Johnson was riding his scooter southbound around 4:40 p.m. when a car exiting the apartment complex suddenly pulled into his path. The impact threw him from the scooter, leaving him critically injured on the roadway.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes and found Johnson unresponsive but still alive. Paramedics worked tirelessly to stabilize him before rushing him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police said the driver briefly stopped after the crash but fled moments later. Authorities later located the vehicle. Officers are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the events leading up to the crash. The Hamden Accident Reconstruction Team continues to investigate what caused the deadly collision.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Shareef Johnson during this challenging time.

Fatal Scooter Accidents in Connecticut

Scooter accidents have become increasingly common across Connecticut as more people use them for quick, affordable transportation. Unfortunately, scooters provide little protection in a crash, meaning even minor impacts can lead to severe or fatal injuries.

Common causes of deadly scooter accidents include:

  • Failure to Yield: Drivers often pull into traffic or turn without noticing smaller vehicles like scooters.
  • Driver Inattention: Many motorists overlook scooters when merging, exiting driveways, or changing lanes.
  • Speeding: High speeds reduce reaction time and increase the force of impact.
  • Distracted Driving: Phone use or in-car distractions take attention away from the road for crucial seconds.
  • Low Visibility: Poor lighting or blind spots during dusk or dawn make it harder to see scooter riders.

When a loved one dies in a scooter or motorcycle crash, the loss can be unbearable. Families are left not only grieving but also facing medical bills, funeral costs, and the sudden absence of emotional and financial support.

Under Connecticut wrongful death laws, surviving family members have the right to pursue compensation for these losses. A brave wrongful death attorney can investigate the crash, gather evidence, and fight for the justice your loved one deserves.
